Katsa is Graced with fighting, meaning that she is supernaturally skilled at fighting. Her uncle, King Randa, uses her as his personal muscle to threaten, torture, and sometimes kill those who anger him. Unhappy with this, she starts the Council, a secret group designed to fight injustices in all the land. Working for the Council, she rescues the father-in-law of King Ror of Lienid. No one knows why the old man was taken or who was responsible. Katsa works to solve this mystery with the aid of the Graced Prince Po of Lienid.
Enemies to friends to lovers is a romance trope I will never tire of, and it is employed beautifully here. Po is a terrific character, absent of the toxic masculinity that makes Giddon such an unacceptable match for Katsa. Beyond the romance, the mystery kept me on my toes. The villain proved to be truly frightening, which always makes for a better story. I am eager to read more books within this world.
