Hal, a retired Chicago police officer sets out to make a completely new start in life. His choice is to move into a ramshackle home set in a tiny village in Ireland. Arriving there, he expects peace and opportunities to engage in physical work to mend his home, his heart and his spirit. A totally different and unexpected life begins when a very poor, unmannerly and fatherless youth invades his small Irish world. The youth, Trey, requests that Hal work with him to find out what happened to his missing elder brother. The lively pub, local store, and the pastoral sheep meadows all take on a darkness once the duo start their queries to the tight knit locals.
I was truly surprised at how the mystery played out and wished for the light to return to both Hal and Trey’s lives. A bit of the sorrow was lifted by the presence of a local widow, Lena, and her litter of pups in need of homes. The story held my attention but, alas, I need to know “what happened next”. Well written with descriptions that I viewed easily in my mind’s eye.
