Begin Again is not a biography, although it is infused all throughout with biographical details about James Baldwin. Glaude writes this book as a call to action using Baldwin’s life as a blueprint. Baldwin lived through racial trauma, progress, and backlash. Glaude connects these elements to what we are experiencing today in America.
Not having read much James Baldwin, this was a great introduction to his life and work. It also inspired me to take greater action in the work against racism in America. As Glaude often noted, Baldwin had so much advice that applies as well today and in our own lives as it did in his own time and direct audience.
If you’ve read How To Be an Antiracist or White Fragility or any number of similar titles, then you should add this book to your reading list. One can never go wrong by learning about James Baldwin.
