SUMMARY:You are a Story: Memoir & Illinois Novelists
DESCRIPTION:You are a Story: Memoir & Illinois Novelists\nThe big questions we all ask at some point in our lives—Who am I? Why am I here? What does it all mean?—are often explored through philosophy\, poetry\, and psychology. \nThis workshop examines how writing memoirs\, telling our own stories\, and recording our lives can help us search for those same answers. Drawing inspiration from two Illinois novelists\, Ray Bradbury and Ernest Hemingway\, we’ll see how even fiction can be deeply autobiographical and how their approaches to storytelling can guide us in writing our own. \nThe presentation is divided into three interactive parts: personal identity\, reflections becoming reality\, and learning as transformation. \nJune 27\, 2026\n2:00 pm – 3:00 pm\nHoward Rutan Meeting Room \nBased in Montgomery\, IL\nDr. Aaron J. Lawler is a professor of humanities at Waubonsee Community College with nearly 25 years of experience as an educator. He is a researcher at Chicago’s Field Museum and a speaker for Illinois Humanities. He serves on five boards: Kaneland D302 School Board\, Chicago WTTW Channel 11\, Illinois Historical Society\, 3:11 Project\, and the Apiquian Scholarship Foundation. Additionally\, he is a lifelong member of the National Geographic Society\, and a classically trained painter. \nAaron has dedicated his personal and professional lives to the humanities as a thinker\, a writer\, an artist\, and a lover of culture and expression. He is married to his best friend and has been with her for 25 years. He has two amazing kids and loves to read\, travel\, and find rare vinyls whenever he can. \n  \nThis program is made possible through a partnership with Illinois Humanities. \nThe Library is committed to making programs accessible to all. If you would like an accommodation\, please email the Community Relations Administrator at btruscelli@danvillepubliclibrary.org or call 217-477-5220 ext. 111.

SUMMARY:Virtual Author Talk: Matt Dinniman
DESCRIPTION:Apocalyptic Mayhem\, Lava-Spitting Llamas\, and One Very Sassy Cat: Surviving the Universe’s Most Twisted RPG with Matt Dinniman\nNew York Times Bestselling Author and Literary Dungeon Master\nThursday\, June 11th\, 2026\, at 6:00 PM\n(Watch online or join our watch party in the Howard Rutan Meeting Room!)\nRegister now for your private live link or find the recording after the event here: https://libraryc.org/danvillepubliclibrary/172099 \n  \nHold onto your heart-patterned boxers! Matt Dinniman\, New York Times bestselling author of the wildly popular (and just plain wild) Dungeon Crawler Carl series\, joins us to chat about his latest book\, A Parade of Horribles.  \n  \nAs chaos and mass panic spread outside the dungeon in the wake of Faction Wars\, Carl and Donut find themselves on the tenth floor\, where they’re forced to compete in a surprisingly normal set of tasks. Well\, normal for the dungeon. \n  \nRaces. Get from point A to point B\, and don’t come in last. After each race\, they pick an upgrade for their vehicle and the track gets more challenging. It all seems a little too normal\, a little too simple. \n  \nIgnore those strange glitches that are occurring with increasing frequency. Don’t listen to those whispers about what’s happening on the mysterious eleventh floor\, something the system AI calls A Parade of Horribles. Nobody\, not even the showrunners\, knows what that means. Just that the AI has ominously dubbed it “a coming-out party for the ages.” \n  \nEverything is fine\, Crawler. I repeat\, everything is fine. \n  \nCarl hates that it’s business as usual. The rules of this floor have taken away his agency. That just will not do. \n  \nSo Carl is planning a party of his own. It’s a plan so dangerous\, so insane\, he can’t even consult his friends lest the AI put a stop to it. Because if it goes wrong\, it’s not just the end of Carl and Donut. No. The stakes are higher than they’ve ever been. \n  \nRegister now for a fun-filled discussion you won’t want to miss! \n  \nAbout the Author: \nMatt Dinniman is a writer and artist from Gig Harbor\, Washington. He is the author of the New York Times bestselling Dungeon Crawler Carl series along with several other books about the end of the world.  \nHe doesn’t really hate Cocker Spaniels\, and he plays bass in one band. \n  \nAll events are free and open to the public.  For more information or to register for the author talks\, visit https://libraryc.org/danvillepubliclibrary or call 217-477-5220.\nQuestions? Visit the FAQ page here: https://help.libraryc.org/patron-faq/frequently-asked-questions/ \nBrought to you in partnership with the Library Speakers Consortium and a grant from Danville Library Foundation. \nThe Library is committed to making programs accessible to all. SUMMARY:Comic Book Culture and Illinois: A Living History
DESCRIPTION:Comic Book Culture and Illinois: A Living History\nIllinois has consistently served as a touchstone for the history of comic strips and books: creators have lived here\, publishers have set up shop here\, and important events have occurred here. While Chicagoland has inspired memorable characters (Dick Tracy\, Blondie\, and Brenda Starr)\, downstate has made lasting contributions to the culture as well (Popeye\, Black Panther\, and The Phantom). \nThis presentation traces the many ways that Illinois and comics have formed a symbiotic relationship: politics\, labor\, law and order\, education\, architecture\, and identity. Through contextualizing how comics culture has responded to these aspects of Illinois history\, this program will demonstrate a complex unity between the two. From Hollywood to Broadway\, the Mafia to Congress\, and a future King of England\, Illinois has shaped an entire industry. This\, in turn\, has nurtured a rich and vibrant comics community\, thereby reinforcing the important relationship between Illinois history and comics culture. \nMay 9\, 2026\n12:30 pm – 1:30 pm\nHoward Rutan Meeting Room \n  \nBased in Glen Carbon\, IL\nDr. Stephen Harrick is a writer\, historian\, scholar\, educator\, and theatre artist.
