Jim Preston (Chris Pratt) a mechanical engineer is on an 120 year journey in a hibernation pod on the ship, the Avalon. There are 5,000 other souls on the ship. Thirty years into the trip, an asteroid causes major malfunctions that causes Jim’s pod to open. He is alone on the ship for one year by himself except for an android bartender named Arthur. He has everything else he needs to survive. During this time frame Jim becomes depressed and contemplates committing suicide until he notices a beautiful woman. Aurora Lane (Jennifer Lawrence) is a young writer who is looking forward to getting to “the other side” and writing about her experiences. Jim is able to view her file and find out a lot about the young woman and he finds himself falling in love with her. He struggles with the decision to cause her pod to malfunction so that they can fall in love. He confides in Arthur about his “secret.”
Once Aurora is out of her pod, she and Jim become closer. They fall for each other and as Jim prepares to propose to Aurora, he said that there are to be “no secrets” between them. Arthur, being an android doesn’t “lie.” He tells Aurora what Jim did to her pod. When Aurora hears this, she wants nothing to do with Jim.
Shortly after this occurs, another pod opens. This time it is the chief officer, Gus Mancuso. He attempts to tell Jim and Aurora how to fix the ship. They soon find out that Gus only has hours to live. It is up to Jim and Aurora to come together and fix the ship and save the lives of the rest of the passengers and crew.
CRITIQUE:
This was a VERY good movie. Part of it was due to the difficult moral decisions of the main character. The special effects were also very beautiful and intense!!
